Hotwire is a discount travel website, that offers low prices on: airfare, hotel, rental car and vacation packages by selling off unsold travel inventory at discounted prices. Hotwire wa launched on 2000, they were funded by a leading private equity firm: Texas Pacific Group, with an initial $75 million investment. Prior to its formal launch, Hotwire was codenamed as Purple Demon. Hotwire first launched with opaque airline tickets. They started selling opaque hotel and rental cars a few months later, followed by package offerings that started in 2003. Hotwire began to offer select retail travel products by 2004 and by 2007, Hotwire removed all airfare booking fares.
Their Method of operations is by selling opaque tickets. When Hotel rooms, airline seats or car rentals go unsold, travel companies use Hotwire to fill them. Hotwire does not identify the participating companies until after the purchaser has paid so as not to directly compete with regular retail sales of the travel partners. This sales model is known as “opaque”. According to the Hotwire web site, they deal with brand-name travel companies exclusively. This strategy allows Hotwire partners to clear out their supply and sell inventory that would otherwise go unsold. Hotwire reveals the prices and the travel dates of all their products upfront and does not sell via a “bidding” or “auction” model. Hotwire also offers a set of open travel APIs that can be used in travel applications.
Hotwire is headquartered in San Francisco California, and functions as an operating company of Expedia, Inc. Hotwire Operates with one General Manager and Six Vice Presidents on its management team. The company began with only 4 employees which grew up to 80 within months, as of now: Hotwire has over 300 employees.
What people are saying
Customers are disappointed on how Hotwire handles their bookings and purchases. Hotwire specializes in hotel reservations so it would be easy to find a lodging that suit up your needs. The problem with Hotwire is their Hidden Deals, that features deeply discounted hotels, but you must book them without knowing the hotel’s name or address. A review about this is posted below:
“I just got burned by Hotwire. I booked a hotel at LAX in order to get rest before an allnight trip. After booking I learned (as is their normal procedures) that I would be staying at the Holiday Inn LAX. That sounded fine to me until I called the hotel directly to make a routine inquirey. The front desk personnel told me that they were under a complete renovation, and there was dust in the air and hammering and pounding noises from 8AM to 7PM and there was no quiet in the hotel anywhere. So, after thinking about the dust and the noise that would intrude on my best 4 hours of possible sleep (working all night, remember?) I called Hotwire and told them I couldn’t stay there. They imformed me that I would have to check in and only then could they “walk” me to another hotel…. Maybe. So, that’s two cab rides (not cheap in LA) and about 1 1/2 hours of my time, when they know the hotel will be unacceptable because the hotel itself says so! Resist the temptation, don’t use these guys! You’re buying a ‘Pig in a Poke’.”
