Phuket International Airport Reviews
The island of Phuket, Thailand is widely known amongst travelers for being one of the most popular resort destinations in the world. The island boasts spectacular beaches and warm sunsets that set the mood for a perfect summer vacation.
On this island we will find Phuket International Airport, Thailand’s third busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic. The airport is a major contributing factor to the country’s tourism industry.
What People Think of Phuket International Airport
Looking at Phuket International Airport reviews, it is evident that things are not going well. The airport has got only 2 stars out of 10 in Skytrax’s Airline Quality website. It seems that people are unhappy about the airport’s facilities and services.
“[There are] so many things wrong”, exclaimed one passenger. According to him, the airport’s inefficiency and lack of organization should be an example of ‘what not to do’ when managing an airport. Another passenger complained about the check in area being overly crowded with people. “Like an octopus”, is how he described the several long queues of people all trying to get through a single door. In fact, most of the passengers who posted their reviews on the website complained about the shockingly long lines, and the fact that Thailand is a tropical country makes things even worse. Simply put, you will be sweaty.
On the good side, a few people commended the airport security for being very thorough in inspecting the baggages, which makes the passengers feel somewhat safer. The ground staff, although not very friendly, were professional enough.
Now, let’s take a look at what’s inside. After walking in, passengers in need of assistance may approach the information and help desks which are found all over the airport. Directions and signages are also of significant sizes.
The bathrooms were also significantly dirtier compared to other airports. Some passengers may notice wet floors, which is probably due to the squat toilets which are widely used in Thailand. The bathrooms are obviously not meant for the squeamish so make sure to bring your own paper towels in case you get splashed.
As for food and beverage options, there is a wide array for you to choose from. Most of them are located inside the airport, which includes some fast food joints and a restaurant owned by Thai Airways. Not much shopping options here though, aside from small souvenir shops and a duty free.
The airport itself, although clean and still practical, is not a very good-looking one. It seems old and a bit cramped due to the large number of people it handles every day. So if you’re on a layover, it would be better if you just rented a hotel for a few hours.
The airport is located 20 miles (32 kilometers) from Phuket City’s downtown. To get to and from the airport, you may either ride a taxi (a bit expensive) or you can ride the airport bus. The second option is, for me, the better choice if you want to save some cash. The bus travels from the airport terminal to Phuket town and back.
If you choose to ride the bus, simply go to the first floor and wait outside the arrival hall. There, you will be able to locate the Phuket Bus Terminal.
Location, Traffic and Services
With over 12 million annual passengers, a single, 3,000 meter-long runway and 84,000 aircraft movements every year, Phuket International Airport is recognized as Thailand’s busiest airport in terms of passenger movement.
Perhaps due to its small size, only Thai AirAsia uses the airport as their main hub.
Currently, the airport’s one and only terminal is undergoing a major renovation and expansion. This will allow for more space and would give the airport a well-needed upgrade. This expansion will be finished by June 2016.
Another international terminal is being constructed and will also be completed by June 2016.

According to the Phuket International Airport reviews written by the previous airport-goers, we can see that the airport needs to improve its services. Thailand is a wonderful country bursting with culture, however, if tourists do not receive a proper welcome, the country’s tourism industry will surely feel the impact. For those who booked a flight to Phuket, don’t expect too much from the airport. Although it is functional, it is far from being one of the best.
